How Packaging and Quality Control Relate to E-Commerce
Running a small business is fraught with potential setbacks, but one of the most difficult problems many encounter is creating a brand image that customers will embrace. It’s hard enough just running the day-to-day operations, bringing in business and getting shipments out the door. And likely you are either running everything on your own or merely scraping by with a skeleton-crew of a staff (each of whom wear many hats). You probably think that packaging and quality control are pretty far down on the list of priorities. After all, quantity can be more important than quality when you’re just trying to get out of the red. But if you want to create a brand image that consumers come to associate with quality, you’re going to have to put your heart into the details.
Proper packaging is an essential element of your overall presentation. You may be tempted to argue that as long as the product is good, it doesn’t matter what package it comes in. But you have to look at it from the perspective of the customer. Certainly they are not paying you extra for the packaging. They’re buying a product. But this is exactly why receiving a package that is thoughtfully arranged and aesthetically pleasing is going to give consumers a high opinion of your company. It’s unexpected. Anyone can utilize the bare minimum of utilitarian packaging. So if you go a step above and provide a covering for your product that is stylistically in keeping with the object it houses, promoting your brand (usually with a logo or other unique design) and wowing the customer, you’re likely to see more repeat business and complimentary correspondence.
But it doesn’t end there. You also need to make quality control your number one priority. Nothing will sour a customer faster than a product that arrives defective or broken. And it’s not just restricted to first-time buyers. Consumers are fickle. Even those who have been pleased with the quality of your products in the past will be quick to remark that your brand is “going downhill” if they receive faulty merchandise. And you likely have plenty of competitors that are willing to swoop in and woo even your best customers with the promise of a better product. The world of e-commerce can be cut-throat and you need to take every opportunity to get the upper hand. This can be done through both your choice of packaging and your commitment to shipping quality goods and ensuring that they arrive in pristine condition.
Although it can be difficult to allocate the time and money needed to make these types of changes in your business, they will pay off in the long run. With customers knowing they can count on you for a certain level of quality, you’ll reap the financial benefits of repeat business and word-of-mouth advertising. Further, by wowing the customer with your devotion to a product and presentation that goes beyond expectations, you’re going to begin building a solid brand image that will carry you into the future and help you to expand down the line.
