National Geographic’s 7 Billion

National Geographic is doing a yearlong series focused on population growth past and future.  The first article, 7 Billion, covers the history of population growth and the major concepts of demography.

The title refers to the planet’s current population, which is expected to grow to 9 billion by 2050.  The series will explore the implications of this growth.  I highly recommend the article and I’m looking forward to the entire series.  There is also a great YouTube video that summarizes the key points.

We spend a lot of time on demographic trends in our work.  Demographics drive many of the key trends that impact business and society.

The next decade will be one of the most dynamic decades of demographic change ever.  Major shifts include:

  1. Aging baby boomers.
  2. Gen Y entering middle age.
  3. The growing role of women in business and society.
  4. Global urbanization.
  5. Growing multiculturalism of the U.S.

We cover our view of what this will mean in more detail in the Intuit 2020 Report.
