Via Christi Health system to cut 400 workers

Via Christi Health announced Tuesday it will lay off up to 400 staff members across Kansas about 4 percent of its workforce by the end of June.

Via Christi officials said that like other health care providers, they have seen a decline in hospital admissions and physician visits, leading to lower than anticipated revenue.

The majority of the cuts will be in Wichita, said Jeff Korsmo, president and CEO of Via Christi Health.

It will be more in our hospital and clinic settings and less in senior services, which havent felt the same volume impact and negative volume trend, Korsmo said.

Early estimates are that about 50 positions will be eliminated in Pittsburg, about 25 positions will be cut from Manhattan, and the remainder of the reductions will be made in Wichita.

Via Christi has about 10,000 staff members statewide.

Last month, Via Christi Health was completely acquired by Ascension Health.

‘£6bn’ cost of extra day off

The extra bank holiday for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee could have cost the economy up to £6bn in lost output, the Office for National Statistics said yesterday.

Paying more for fewer services is just a fact of life for today’s air travelers. But the rise in the true cost of air travel over the past five years is staggering–and it’s causing many small businesses to re-evaluate the role air travel plays in their ever-shrinking business travel budgets.

Citing a new study by Boyd Group International, the Denver Post has reported that the true cost of a one-way airline ticket has risen by 30 percent since 2008 and that low cost carriers may not significantly lower the overall cost of airfare.

The price of a one-way ticket increased to $220 during Q4 2012, a 12.5 percent increase since 2008. But the real price of air travel increased by 29.1 percent when travelers consider the costs of services that were previously included in the ticket price.

“Today, the fare is just the down payment,” said Michael Boyd, chairman of Boyd Group International.

The surprise surrounding the crisis engulfing global business news giant Bloomberg may only be that it has taken so long to erupt.

Both the US Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve are reported to be examining the extent to which Bloomberg reporters tracked officials’ use of information carried on the Bloomberg terminal, a device that dominates trading desks from New York to London and beyond.

Bloomberg employees are even said to have accessed details of ex-Fed chief Alan Greenspan’s contacts with the company’s help desk.

The probe follows revelations Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase were angered that Bloomberg reporters were using the terminals to identify employees who might have left the two banks.

US appeals panel speaks well of Google book plans

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal appeals panel in Manhattan has expressed support for Google Inc.’s plan to create the world’s largest digital library.

Three judges on the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday spoke positively about the benefits the plan would provide the world.

The panel is considering an appeal by Mountain View, Calif.-based Google of a judge’s decision on class certification of authors in a lawsuit brought by the Authors Guild.

Bennett to business owners: I’d move to Syria

Israel’s economic leaders vowed to ease the burdens on small businesses, at the Calcalist conference for Small and Medium Enterprises at Tel Aviv’s David Intercontinental Hotel on Monday, promising to clear away red tape and reduce burdensome bureaucracy .

Economy and Trade Minister Naftali Bennett lamented the regulatory burden Israel put on its businesses, saying that an average business had to spend 235 hour a month, well over the amount a full-time employee puts in, just in dealing with regulatory requirements.

Even those of us who did not agree with everything she did cannot deny the achievements or the influence of Margaret Thatcher. While there is room to debate whether Caesar, Napoleon, Churchill, or whoever, is the Greatest Man in History, when defined purely in terms of personal accomplishment, it is hard to think of any serious challenger to Margaret Thatcher as the Greatest Woman in History by that definition.

For a commoner from a modest background to become the first ever female Head of Government of a major power would have been triumph enough in itself, but it was what she did with that office that set her apart from every other British politician since Churchill.

For better or for worse, she changed Britain completely – and if there was, as with all politicians, a bit of both, on balance the better far outweighed the worse. W
